**Origin of the Name**  
Labradorite takes its name from the region where it was first discovered – Labrador, Canada. For this reason, it is sometimes also referred to as "Labrador stone." Because it contains a complex intergrowth of multiple crystalline minerals, its internal layers interfere with and diffract light. When you change the angle of light hitting the stone, it flashes a spectrum of iridescent colours – a phenomenon known as "labradorescence." This is why labradorite is also called "spectrolite."

Geological workers in Hubei Province have discovered labradorite in the Shennongjia area, where the local geological features match ancient records. Some believe that the famous "He's Bi" (a legendary jade disc) from the Warring States period, which was said to be priceless, may have actually been a gem‑grade labradorite artefact.

**North America**  
In Native American folklore, the butterfly goddess is associated with labradorite. It was believed that possessing this rainbow‑coloured stone brought the goddess's blessing, enabling one to become the leader of a tribe or clan.
